Mures is a county in Transylvania region of Romania. It has a total area of 6714 km ², representing 2.8% of the total country's surface. The county's name comes from the Mureº River, the river which crosses the county from North-East to South-West. Mureº County is located in the North-Central area of the country in the Transylvanian Plateau, being situated between the Meridians 23 ° 55 'and 25 ° 14' East longitude and the Parallels 46 ° 09 'and 47 ° 00' North latitude. The county lies between the mountainous peaks of Cãlimani and Gurghiu to the Tarnavelor Plateau and Transylvanian Plain. The physico-geographic axis of the county is the Mures River which crosses the county from NE to SW on a distance of 140 km, the river also borrowing the name of Mureº to the county.
